Warning following empty Nitrous Oxide canisters found in Caerphilly

We’ve recently received reports that young people are inhaling gas out of nitrous oxide canisters in the Caerphilly area and empty canisters have been found.

Nitrous oxide or ‘laughing gas’ as it’s more commonly known, is a gas with several legitimate uses, but when inhaled it can make people feel euphoric and relaxed however some people also experience hallucinations, dizziness and difficulty in thinking straight.

Officers are warning people of the dangers of inhaling this has as there is a risk of death as a lack of oxygen can occur when using nitrous oxide. This risk is likely to be greater if the gas is consumed in an enclosed space or if a substantial amount is rapidly used.

PS Andy Elias said; “We’re increasingly concerned about young people using this gas which can cause dizziness or affect judgement and may make people act carelessly or dangerously putting themselves at risk. Young people may think it’s just a bit of fun but it can be hard to judge the amount to use safely and too much you can end up fainting, having an accident or much worse.

“Mixing nitrous oxide with alcohol is especially dangerous as it can increase the risks associated with both substances and can lead to an increased risk of accidents or death. Our message is clear, please make sure you stay away from inhaling these substances.”
